Where is Belfast Christmas Market?
The market takes place in the grounds of Belfast City Hall, Donegall Square, Belfast City centre.
It would be difficult to find a better setting. The grand City Hall building towers over the rows of illuminated wooden chalets, and once darkness falls the entire area becomes particularly atmospheric. Because the market is right in the city centre, you can easily combine it with shopping, restaurants and Belfast's other Christmas attractions.
Is Admission Free?
Yes. Admission to Belfast Christmas Market is completely free. You only pay for whatever you decide to buy once you're inside — food, drinks, gifts, rides and attractions. You don't need a general admission ticket just to wander around.
What to Expect
The grounds of City Hall are transformed into a festive village filled with wooden chalets. More than half of the stalls are occupied by local traders, alongside international sellers bringing food, gifts and products from further afield.
Food: The market has always had a strong international feel. Expect bratwurst, burgers, continental sausages, crepes, waffles, chocolates, cheese, hot chocolate, mulled drinks and international dishes. There is also a dedicated outdoor festive food court where you can sit down and eat. Our advice? Don't arrive immediately after lunch.
Shopping: Local and international traders sell handmade crafts, jewellery, Christmas decorations, clothing, artisan food, gifts and accessories. With local businesses making up more than half of the traders, it's also a good opportunity to support smaller producers.
Attractions: The market's vintage carousel has become one of its most recognisable features. There is also a giant helter-skelter — climb to the top for panoramic views across the market and Belfast city centre before sliding back down, particularly impressive after dark when the market and City Hall are fully illuminated.
Christmas Lights Switch-On
Opening day is particularly special in 2026. The Christmas Market opens on Saturday 14 November, the same day as Belfast's Christmas lights switch-on, scheduled for the evening around City Hall. That means the first Saturday could be one of the busiest — but also one of the most atmospheric — days to visit. If you prefer fewer crowds, choose a weekday later in November instead.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
For families: Visit earlier in the day or on a Sunday afternoon. You'll usually have more space and won't be dealing with the biggest late-evening crowds.
For couples: An evening visit is hard to beat. Once darkness falls, City Hall lights up and the whole market becomes much more atmospheric. Thursday or Friday evening would be our choice.
For fewer crowds: Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, and earlier in the day. Saturday evenings in December are likely to be extremely busy.
Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours if you want to browse properly, eat something and enjoy the atmosphere.
A Full Belfast Christmas Day
Because the market is right in the centre of Belfast, it's easy to turn your visit into a full festive day. Arrive in the morning and explore the city centre, do some Christmas shopping around Donegall Place and Victoria Square, grab lunch at the market, explore City Hall or another Belfast attraction in the afternoon, then return to the market once the lights are glowing. Finish with dinner or drinks in the Cathedral Quarter.
If you enjoy markets, don't stop with the Christmas one — St George's Market is another Belfast institution, within walking distance of City Hall, and is particularly atmospheric during the Christmas season.
Getting There
By train or bus: Belfast is well connected from across Northern Ireland and from Dublin by rail. Once in central Belfast, City Hall is within easy walking distance of the main transport hubs. Public transport is considerably easier than driving into central Belfast on a busy December Saturday.
By car: Several multi-storey car parks are available around central Belfast. The city centre becomes extremely busy during the Christmas period — if possible, park once and explore on foot.
What to Wear
The market is outdoors. And this is Belfast in November and December. Bring a warm coat, waterproof jacket, hat, gloves, comfortable shoes and an umbrella if needed. Standing around with food and drinks means you'll feel the cold more than if you were walking continuously.
