10 Best Irish Castles to Visit at Halloween 2026

Ireland has no shortage of castles that look as though they were built specifically for Halloween.

Ruined towers on windswept hills, medieval fortresses with dark passageways, centuries-old ghost stories and the occasional resident spirit all help.

But during October, some Irish castles take things a step further.

For Halloween 2026, you can follow haunted trails around castle grounds, hear ghost stories inside historic rooms, watch fire performers beneath medieval walls and even spend the night in a castle said to have its own resident ghost.

Here are 10 of the best castles in Ireland for Halloween 2026.

1. Malahide Castle, County Dublin

If you're looking for a castle that is really embracing Halloween in 2026, Malahide is difficult to beat.

The castle has stood here for almost 800 years, so there's already plenty of history before the Halloween decorations even appear.

From 17–31 October 2026, the grounds host The Haunted Trail: Malahide Samhain Festival.

Visitors journey through four immersive areas around the estate, encountering characters inspired by Irish folklore along the way — including Puck, Malahide's resident ghost.

There's also a Celtic Samhain Village where visitors can discover traditions connected with ancient Irish Halloween celebrations, including turnip carving, storytelling and fire performances. The trail finishes at a food village where you can pick up something warm afterwards.

Malahide is also hosting The Traitorous Tale: A Ghoulish Feast on selected Friday evenings from 9–30 October — an after-dark experience combining live theatre, some of the darker stories from the castle's past and a full feast.

Best for: The complete castle Halloween experience.

2. Trim Castle, County Meath

Few Irish castles provide a better Halloween backdrop than Trim.

Ireland's largest Anglo-Norman castle dominates the centre of the town, and during the Púca Festival the entire area takes on a completely different atmosphere.

The 2026 Púca Festival runs from 29 October to 1 November across Trim and Athboy, with fire performances, Irish mythology, storytelling, music, circus, comedy, Samhain traditions and street performances.

One of the biggest spectacles takes place on 30 October, when the Púca Procession moves through Trim accompanied by music, performers and otherworldly characters. That evening also includes a spectacular Pyro Collective fire performance against the backdrop of Trim Castle — and this particular event is free.

If you're after somewhere that genuinely feels connected with the Irish origins of Halloween rather than simply having pumpkins scattered around the place, Trim should be high on the list.

Best for: Samhain atmosphere and huge Halloween spectacle.

3. Ardgillan Castle, County Dublin

Ardgillan looks wonderfully elegant during the daytime. At Halloween, things become considerably less peaceful.

From 22 October to 1 November 2026, the castle hosts The Ardgillan Residents Return: Craic from the Crypt.

The former Taylor family residents return from the dead during Samhain and aren't particularly sure why strangers are wandering around their house. Visitors are taken through the castle's rooms by ghostly family members while hearing local history, family gossip and some of Ardgillan's darker stories — including the legend of the Lady of the Stairs.

There are five performances each evening, with a mixture of comedy, folklore and proper Halloween scares.

Best for: Ghost stories inside an actual castle.

4. Swords Castle, County Dublin

Swords Castle hosts not one but two different cultural celebrations on 31 October.

The first is a celebration of Día de los Muertos – Day of the Dead, with music, dance, food, storytelling, a traditional decorated altar and an outdoor screening of Coco.

Later, Halloween night finishes with the Fingal Festival of Fire — music from around 6.30pm followed by a huge fireworks display above the historic castle. Both events are free.

Swords Castle itself dates back to around 1200, when it was built for the Archbishop of Dublin. That's a pretty spectacular backdrop for Halloween night.

Best for: A free Halloween castle experience.

5. Howth Castle, County Dublin

Howth Castle joins Ireland's expanding Home of Halloween programme in 2026 with special Samhain experiences.

From 28 October into 1 November, visitors can join guided Samhain Tours of Howth Castle — led by a historian sharing tales of ghostly encounters, former residents, local legends, Samhain traditions and centuries of castle history.

Howth is already fantastic for an autumn day trip, so you could easily combine the castle with the harbour, Howth village and a coastal walk. There are also separate Samhain food experiences at Howth Castle during Halloween week.

Best for: History lovers who prefer genuine stories to jump scares.

6. Kilkenny Castle, County Kilkenny

Kilkenny is one of Ireland's best cities to visit at Halloween.

Narrow medieval streets, one of Ireland's finest castles and a rather convenient connection to one of Europe's most infamous medieval witchcraft cases — the story of Alice Kyteler and Petronilla de Meath.

Halloween 2026 brings Kilkenny's Toil & Trouble Festival, running from 29 October to 1 November, with music, storytelling, folklore, family activities and performances across the medieval city.

Kilkenny Castle Park also hosts the Sounds of Samhain on 25 October, with live music and entertainment inspired by Ireland's harvest and Samhain traditions. You can also join one of Kilkenny's ghost tours and finish your evening wandering beneath the castle walls.

Best for: Medieval streets, witchcraft history and Halloween atmosphere.

7. Bremore Castle, County Dublin

Bremore Castle in Balbriggan provides another spectacular backdrop for the Fingal Festival of Fire on 31 October 2026.

Music begins from around 6.30pm, building towards a fireworks display at approximately 7.30pm. And once again, it's free.

The combination of fireworks exploding above a historic castle makes this a particularly good option if you've got children and want something memorable without spending a fortune.

Best for: Free family Halloween fireworks.

8. Leap Castle, County Offaly

Now we're getting into proper ghost territory.

Leap Castle doesn't need a Halloween event. It has been frightening people perfectly well on its own for centuries.

The castle near Roscrea is regularly described as one of Ireland's most haunted buildings. Its history involves feuding families, violence, imprisonment and plenty of stories that have grown considerably darker with each retelling. One of its most famous locations is the so-called Bloody Chapel. Then there's the castle's mysterious supernatural presence often referred to as an Elemental, which according to legend announces itself with an unpleasant smell.

Leap Castle is privately owned and visits are normally by prior arrangement, so don't simply arrive at the gates expecting a standard visitor attraction. But if you're genuinely interested in Irish ghost stories and haunted locations, this is probably the castle you've already heard about.

Best for: Serious ghost-story fans.

9. Bunratty Castle, County Clare

Even without a dedicated Halloween event confirmed for 2026 at the time of writing, Bunratty deserves a place on a Halloween castle road trip.

The present castle dates from the 15th century and is one of Ireland's most complete restored medieval castles, with great halls, narrow staircases, medieval chambers, historic furniture, towers and battlements. Then you've got the enormous Folk Park outside, with more than 30 historic buildings recreating life in 19th-century Ireland.

Bunratty has previously hosted special Halloween programmes around the October Bank Holiday, so it's worth checking the latest event schedule before travelling. But even without the extras, walking through a medieval castle on a dark October afternoon ticks quite a few Halloween boxes.

Best for: Families who want a full historic attraction as well as Halloween atmosphere.

10. Ballyseede Castle, County Kerry

Fancy going one step further? Instead of visiting a haunted castle, you can sleep in one.

Ballyseede Castle near Tralee is a four-star castle hotel surrounded by around 30 acres of woodland and gardens — and it comes with its own ghost story.

The castle's best-known resident spirit is said to be Hilda Blennerhassett, a former resident associated with Ballyseede. Guests and staff have reported the smell of roses appearing unexpectedly around the main staircase, followed by sightings of a woman in a long black dress. Other stories involve ghostly children and unexplained activity around the upper floors.

Whether you believe any of it is entirely up to you. But if there was ever a weekend to book a night in an old Irish castle with a resident ghost, Halloween seems fairly appropriate.

Best for: Spending Halloween night in a supposedly haunted castle.

Which Castle Should You Choose?

It depends how spooky you actually want your Halloween to be.

For families with younger children: Malahide Castle, Swords Castle, Bremore Castle or Trim during the daytime.

For older children and teenagers: Ardgillan Castle, Kilkenny or Trim during Púca Festival.

For adults: Malahide's Ghoulish Feast, Howth Castle Samhain Tour, Leap Castle or Ballyseede Castle.

And if you only choose one destination for a full Halloween weekend, Trim or Kilkenny would both give you plenty to do beyond the castle itself.

Best Free Castle Halloween Events 2026

Halloween with a family can become expensive remarkably quickly. Thankfully, several castle events are free in 2026.

  • Púca Pyro Collective at Trim Castle – 30 October
  • Púca Procession in Trim – 30 October
  • Fingal Festival of Fire at Swords Castle – 31 October
  • Día de los Muertos at Swords Castle – 31 October
  • Fingal Festival of Fire at Bremore Castle – 31 October

Some events may have capacity limits or specific arrival arrangements, so always check the latest details before travelling.

Tips for Visiting Irish Castles at Halloween

Halloween events at popular castles can sell out quickly, especially during the October mid-term break.

  • Book ticketed experiences early
  • Check age recommendations for each event
  • Wear waterproof shoes for outdoor trails
  • Bring warm layers — it's October in Ireland
  • Allow extra time for parking
  • Check whether photography is allowed indoors
  • Never enter castle ruins that are closed to the public
  • Check event times again on the day

And remember that a lot of Ireland's castles have uneven floors, narrow stairs and outdoor sections. Maybe Halloween isn't the evening for your best white trainers.

Travel Through Ireland Tip

Ireland really doesn't need much help when it comes to creating a Halloween atmosphere.

We've already got ancient Samhain traditions, dark folklore, misty autumn evenings and hundreds of old castles.

But during Halloween 2026, several of those castles are becoming even more atmospheric.

If you're building a Halloween castle road trip, a Dublin and Meath route could take in Malahide → Swords → Ardgillan → Bremore → Trim — a seriously strong itinerary without enormous distances between stops. For a longer trip, continue south towards Kilkenny → Leap Castle → Bunratty, or head west and finish with a night at Ballyseede.

Just maybe don't blame us if you hear footsteps in the corridor at 3am.
