Killaran House Killarney: Guesthouse, Breakfast & Visitor Guide

Killarney certainly isn't short of places to stay.

You'll find everything from large luxury hotels and self-catering apartments to hostels, historic houses and traditional Irish B&Bs.

But sometimes you don't want a huge hotel.

You want somewhere smaller.

Somewhere you can park the car, walk into town, enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast in the morning and actually speak to people who know the area.

That's where Killaran House in Killarney comes in.

Located on Park Road, just 700 metres from Killarney town centre, this award-winning guesthouse combines the comfort and facilities you'd expect from a hotel with the more personal atmosphere of a traditional bed and breakfast.

There are only eight recently refurbished en-suite bedrooms, free on-site parking, superfast Wi-Fi and an extensive breakfast menu cooked fresh to order.

There's even a complimentary 24-hour café station where guests can help themselves to tea, coffee and treats.

But perhaps Killaran House's biggest advantage is its location.

Killarney National Park is around a kilometre away, the train and bus stations are within walking distance and some of Kerry's greatest attractions are right on your doorstep.

If you're looking for a comfortable base for exploring Killarney, the Ring of Kerry and beyond, this is one worth considering.

Where is Killaran House?

Killaran House is located at:

Park Road, Killarney, County Kerry, V93 X883

It's only around 700 metres from Killarney town centre.

That puts the shops, restaurants, cafés and famous Killarney pubs within easy walking distance.

The location is also particularly useful if you're travelling around Ireland without a car.

Killarney Bus Station is approximately 500 metres away, while the train station is around 650 metres from the guesthouse.

And if you are driving? There's free parking waiting for you.

Free On-Site Parking

This might not sound like the most exciting reason to choose accommodation.

Until you arrive in one of Ireland's busiest tourist towns with a car.

Then it suddenly becomes very exciting indeed.

Killaran House provides free on-site parking for guests.

That means you can arrive, leave the car behind and walk into Killarney rather than worrying about finding town-centre parking every time you want dinner or a drink.

It's also ideal if you're using Killarney as the starting point for road trips.

Drive the Ring of Kerry during the day. Return to Killaran House. Park up. Then walk into town for the evening.

Simple.

A Small, Traditional Guesthouse

One of Killaran House's biggest attractions is its size.

With just eight en-suite bedrooms, this isn't a large anonymous hotel.

The property describes what it offers rather nicely: the conveniences of a hotel combined with the cosiness and character of a traditional bed and breakfast.

And that's probably the best way to think about it.

You still get modern facilities such as fast Wi-Fi, Smart TVs and en-suite bathrooms.

But you also get the more personal experience associated with a small independently run guesthouse.

Recently Refurbished Bedrooms

The eight bedrooms at Killaran House have been recently refurbished.

There are several room types available depending on who you're travelling with:

  • Economy Double Rooms
  • Twin Rooms
  • Superior Double Rooms
  • Superior King Rooms
  • Double and Single Rooms
  • Superior Family Rooms

That gives Killaran House options for couples, friends and families rather than catering exclusively for one type of visitor.

All bedrooms have private en-suite shower rooms. You'll also find fluffy towels, toiletries and hairdryers provided.

A Good Option for Families

Killaran House isn't just aimed at couples.

The Superior Family Room provides accommodation for larger family groups, while fold-out futon beds can also be available.

Travel cots and highchairs are available for younger children.

The guesthouse's location is another major advantage for families.

You don't necessarily need to put everyone back into the car every time you want something.

Restaurants, shops and the town centre are within walking distance, while Killarney National Park is nearby.

When you've spent the day driving around Kerry with children, being able to leave the car behind for the evening is a definite bonus.

Breakfast at Killaran House

Breakfast is one of the things Killaran House takes particularly seriously.

Rather than simply putting out a basic continental buffet, the guesthouse offers an extensive breakfast menu freshly prepared and cooked to order.

There are options catering for different tastes and dietary requirements.

Current breakfast choices include continental and cooked breakfasts, with vegetarian and gluten-free requirements catered for.

And when you've got a full day exploring Kerry ahead of you, starting with a proper breakfast isn't a bad idea.

Especially if you're planning on walking.

The 24-Hour Complimentary Café

This is a small touch that we particularly like.

Killaran House has a complimentary 24-hour café station.

Guests can help themselves to tea, coffee and treats throughout their stay.

It's particularly handy when you return after a long day exploring Killarney National Park or driving the Ring of Kerry.

Make yourself a cup of tea, grab a treat and decide what you're doing next.

Simple touches like this can make a small guesthouse feel much more welcoming.

Forgot Your Toothpaste?

We've all done it.

You arrive at your accommodation, open the suitcase, and realise something you were absolutely certain you'd packed is sitting on the bathroom shelf at home.

Killaran House has thought about that too.

There's a complimentary Hospitality Hamper containing useful toiletries guests may have forgotten to bring.

It's another small detail, but it's exactly the sort of thing you appreciate when you actually need it.

There's also a supermarket, deli, off-licence and pharmacy next door to the guesthouse.

So you're unlikely to be stuck for anything for very long.

Free Superfast Wi-Fi

Free superfast fibre Wi-Fi is available throughout Killaran House.

That can be particularly useful for international visitors planning the next stage of their Irish road trip.

Upload the day's photographs. Check tomorrow's weather. Work out your Ring of Kerry route. Or book the next attraction.

Then put the phone away and go and enjoy Killarney.

Smart TVs

Each room also comes with a Smart TV.

Guests can access a wide range of television and radio channels and stream services using their own subscriptions.

You might barely turn it on during a busy summer trip to Kerry.

But on a wet Irish evening after you've spent eight hours exploring, having Netflix available suddenly doesn't sound like a bad feature.

Local Knowledge

One of the biggest advantages of staying in a locally run guesthouse is something that doesn't appear on an amenities list.

Local knowledge.

The Killaran House team are from Killarney and can help visitors work out what to see and do during their stay.

There's also a guest information centre containing local maps and restaurant menus.

That means you don't necessarily need to head straight for the tourist office when you arrive.

Ask questions. Where should we eat tonight? What's the best way to see the Gap of Dunloe? Which route should we take tomorrow?

When you're staying somewhere run by people who genuinely know the area, use that knowledge.

Walking Into Killarney Town

Being around 700 metres from Killarney town centre is a big selling point.

Killarney is one of Ireland's liveliest tourist towns.

There are restaurants, cafés, shops and traditional pubs packed into the centre.

Live music is easy to find during the busy season.

And because Killaran House is within walking distance, you don't have to choose between driving and enjoying a drink with dinner.

Walk into town. Enjoy your evening. Then stroll back afterwards.

For us, that's considerably better than having to find parking every time you want to visit the centre.

Killarney National Park

One of Ireland's greatest natural attractions is also practically on the doorstep.

Killarney National Park is approximately one kilometre from Killaran House.

The park is enormous and includes mountains, lakes, woodland, waterfalls and some of Kerry's most famous historic attractions.

You could spend several days exploring different parts of it.

And we'd strongly recommend doing exactly that if you have the time.

Ross Castle

One of the best-known landmarks within Killarney National Park is Ross Castle.

The 15th-century tower house sits beside Lough Leane in one of the most beautiful settings in Killarney.

You can explore the lakeshore, visit the castle or take a boat trip onto the Lakes of Killarney.

Ross Castle and Lough Leane are roughly 2.5 kilometres from Killaran House, making them easy to incorporate into your stay.

Muckross House and Gardens

Then there's Muckross House.

The magnificent Victorian mansion sits beside Muckross Lake and is surrounded by beautiful gardens.

The wider Muckross area gives you enough to fill much of a day — explore the house, walk through the gardens, visit Muckross Traditional Farms and continue towards nearby Torc Waterfall.

If you're visiting Killarney for the first time, we'd put Muckross high on your list.

Torc Waterfall

Torc Waterfall is one of Killarney's most popular natural attractions.

The waterfall drops through beautiful woodland within the national park and can be reached via a relatively short walk from the main parking area.

It's particularly impressive after rain — which, fortunately for waterfalls, isn't exactly rare in Kerry.

If you're feeling energetic, there are longer walks around Torc Mountain and the surrounding woodland too.

The Gap of Dunloe

Another essential Killarney experience is the Gap of Dunloe.

This dramatic mountain pass runs between the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Purple Mountain.

You can experience it in several ways — walk it, cycle it, take one of Killarney's famous jaunting cars, or combine the Gap with a boat journey through the Lakes of Killarney.

It's around 10 kilometres from Killaran House to the Gap area, making the guesthouse an excellent base for the trip.

The Ring of Kerry

Killarney is also one of the most popular starting points for the Ring of Kerry.

This famous driving route takes you around the Iveragh Peninsula through some of Ireland's most spectacular scenery — mountains, Atlantic coastline, beaches, small towns, historic sites and more viewpoints than you'll realistically have time to stop at.

If you're staying at Killaran House, you can have breakfast, collect the car from the free car park and head straight out for the day.

Then return to Killarney for dinner that evening.

Day Trip to Dingle

You don't have to restrict yourself to the Ring of Kerry either.

The Dingle Peninsula is another possible day trip from Killarney.

Dingle Town, Slea Head Drive and the peninsula's Atlantic scenery make it one of our favourite areas of Kerry.

It's a longer day than simply exploring Killarney itself, but completely achievable if you're spending several nights here.

This is why we'd recommend treating Killarney as a base rather than somewhere you simply pass through.

Beaches

If the weather behaves itself, Kerry has some magnificent beaches.

Inch and Rossbeigh are both within driving distance of Killarney.

That gives families another option when everyone needs a break from castles, driving and sightseeing.

And even when the weather isn't quite warm enough for swimming, Kerry's huge Atlantic beaches are worth visiting simply for the scenery.

Bike Hire

If you'd prefer to explore on two wheels, bike hire is available approximately 500 metres from Killaran House.

Cycling can be a brilliant way to explore parts of Killarney National Park.

It gives you more range than walking while still allowing you to stop whenever something catches your attention.

Ask the team at Killaran House about local routes and hire options.

Laundry Facilities

This is another practical feature that becomes considerably more important during a longer Irish road trip.

Laundry facilities are available for an additional charge.

If you've been travelling around Ireland for a week and are beginning to wonder whether turning your T-shirt inside out technically counts as clean clothing, this could be extremely useful.

Check-In and Check-Out

Current check-in is from approximately 5pm until 8pm.

If you're expecting to arrive outside those hours, contact Killaran House in advance to arrange it.

Check-out is by approximately 11am.

Cancellation conditions depend on the rate booked, so always check the terms when making your reservation.

How Long Should You Stay?

We'd recommend at least two or three nights in Killarney.

One night simply isn't enough to properly experience this part of Kerry.

With three nights you could spend one full day exploring Killarney National Park and another driving part or all of the Ring of Kerry.

Stay longer and you can add the Gap of Dunloe, Dingle Peninsula or a slower day enjoying Killarney itself.

Killaran House's central location makes it particularly well suited to this style of trip.

Is Killaran House Worth Staying At?

If you're looking for a smaller, independently run place to stay close to Killarney town centre, absolutely.

The attraction isn't about enormous spas, swimming pools or luxury hotel restaurants.

It's about convenience and hospitality.

You have just eight rooms. Free parking. Freshly cooked breakfast. A complimentary 24-hour tea and coffee station. Local people who can help you plan your stay. And Killarney town centre only around 700 metres away.

Perhaps most importantly, you can use Killaran House as a base for some of the best experiences Kerry has to offer.

Killarney National Park is nearby. The Ring of Kerry begins on your doorstep. The Gap of Dunloe is within easy reach.

And after a day exploring, you can leave the car parked and walk into Killarney for dinner and traditional music.

Sometimes that's exactly what you need from accommodation.

Travel Through Ireland Tip: Take advantage of the free parking and walk into Killarney in the evening. One of Killaran House's biggest advantages is that you don't have to choose between staying right in the busiest part of town or driving every time you want to visit it. Use the car for the adventures — drive the Ring of Kerry, explore the Gap of Dunloe or head out around the national park. Then return to Killaran House, leave the keys behind and walk the 700 metres into Killarney. Have dinner, find some live music and enjoy your evening without worrying about where you've parked.
