Wild Lights Dublin Zoo 2026: Dates, Tickets & Visitor Guide

One of Dublin's biggest winter events is back.

Wild Lights at Dublin Zoo returns for 2026 with a brand-new theme, Passport to Wonder, transforming the zoo into a huge after-dark world of handcrafted lanterns, music, colour and light.

Running from 12 November 2026 until 5 January 2027, this year's experience takes visitors on a journey around the world through nine immersive zones inspired by different countries, celebrations and traditions.

Expect everything from glowing Japanese cherry blossoms and the neon energy of Seoul to Brazilian Carnival, Diwali, Irish folklore and plenty of Christmas magic.

If you're planning a family trip to Dublin this winter, here's everything you need to know about Wild Lights Dublin Zoo 2026.

When is Wild Lights Dublin Zoo 2026?

Wild Lights runs from:

12 November 2026 – 5 January 2027

The event takes place after dark at Dublin Zoo in the Phoenix Park.

Tickets are timed, and popular weekend and Christmas dates can fill quickly, so it's worth booking ahead if you already know when you want to visit.

What is the Wild Lights 2026 Theme?

The theme for 2026 is Passport to Wonder.

The idea is to take visitors on a journey around the world without ever leaving Dublin Zoo.

Nine different immersive zones use enormous handcrafted lanterns, light displays, music, colour and movement to bring different cultures and celebrations to life.

It's a completely new theme for 2026, so even if you visited Wild Lights last year, you'll be seeing a different experience.

What Can You Expect at Passport to Wonder?

Wild Lights has become much more than simply hanging Christmas lights around the zoo.

The huge lantern installations are the real stars of the show.

For 2026, visitors can expect areas inspired by:

  • Japanese cherry blossoms
  • Seoul and K-Pop
  • Diwali
  • Holi
  • Brazilian Carnival
  • Celtic Ireland
  • Irish folklore
  • Christmas
  • Celebrations and traditions from around the world

The displays combine light, sound, movement and giant lantern sculptures to create a trail through the zoo.

Younger children will probably just see an enormous colourful adventure.

Adults may find themselves stopping every three minutes to take another photo.

Nine Immersive Worlds

The 2026 experience is divided into nine immersive zones.

Each area has its own atmosphere and theme.

One minute you could be walking underneath glowing cherry blossoms.

A few minutes later you might be surrounded by neon-inspired Korean displays.

Then you're heading into a colourful celebration of Diwali or Carnival before eventually reaching a magical Irish section filled with folklore and Celtic influences.

That variety should make Passport to Wonder one of the most colourful Wild Lights themes yet.

Experience Japan Under the Lights

One of the areas visitors can look forward to is inspired by Japan.

Expect glowing cherry blossoms and atmospheric lantern displays designed to make you feel as though you've stepped into a completely different world.

This should be one of the prettiest areas for photos, especially once the whole trail is fully dark.

Feel the Energy of Seoul

Another section takes inspiration from Seoul and K-Pop.

Expect bright neon colours, music and a much more energetic atmosphere than some of the quieter lantern areas.

It's an interesting choice for Wild Lights and should appeal particularly to older children and teenagers.

Celebrate Diwali and Holi

Two of the most colourful celebrations in the world also feature heavily in Passport to Wonder.

Visitors will experience displays inspired by Diwali, the Festival of Lights, along with the enormous bursts of colour associated with Holi.

If there was ever a theme perfectly suited to a light festival, these two are fairly difficult to beat.

Brazilian Carnival Comes to Dublin

Expect even more colour in the Brazilian Carnival section.

Music, movement and illuminated displays will bring the energy of Carnival into the zoo.

Wild Lights has always been at its best when it goes big, colourful and slightly over the top.

This sounds like exactly that.

Finish With Celtic Ireland

After travelling around the world, Passport to Wonder eventually brings visitors home.

The Celtic Ireland section celebrates Irish folklore, music, legends and stories.

Expect fairies, ancient influences and magical characters brought to life through lanterns and light.

For Travel Through Ireland readers, this might end up being one of the most interesting parts of the entire trail.

Is There a Christmas Section?

Yes.

Although Wild Lights isn't exclusively a Christmas event, the 2026 experience includes plenty of festive magic.

The event runs throughout November and December and into early January, making it an easy addition to a Christmas trip to Dublin.

You could combine it with:

  • Dublin Christmas markets
  • Christmas shopping
  • Santa experiences
  • Phoenix Park
  • Dublin city centre lights
  • Christmas events around the city

If you're visiting in December, it can easily become the main evening activity of a festive family day out.

New Flexible Wild Lights Tickets

There is also a useful new option for 2026.

Dublin Zoo is offering Flexible Wild Lights tickets.

These allow you to visit on any open weekday – Monday to Friday – between 12 November 2026 and 5 January 2027.

That can be handy if you're worried about work schedules, family plans or Irish winter weather.

Wild Lights Early Bird Offer

There is a particularly good offer running until 12 October 2026.

Customers making an eligible general Wild Lights booking between 28 September and 12 October can receive a complimentary daytime family visit to Dublin Zoo.

The free visit covers up to 2 adults + 2 children and must be used by 24 December 2026.

That effectively gives qualifying families both a Wild Lights night and another daytime trip to Dublin Zoo.

Annual Pass holders have a different early-booking offer, giving eligible customers a 20% discount towards their next Annual Pass renewal.

If you already know you're going, booking before 12 October is worth considering.

Wild Lights and Santa's Grotto

There is another new option for families visiting in the run-up to Christmas.

Dublin Zoo is offering a combined Wild Lights & Santa's Grotto experience.

The package combines a visit to Santa with Passport to Wonder.

Santa's Grotto tickets include:

  • A visit to Santa
  • One present per child
  • Personalised key ring
  • Fridge magnet
  • Printed photobook per booking
  • Wild Lights admission

Current combined prices: Adult €36.50 · Child aged 3+ €43 · Under 3 €18.

This obviously costs more than Wild Lights alone, but it could make sense for families who were already planning to book a Santa experience somewhere else.

Sensory-Friendly Wild Lights

Dublin Zoo is also offering a Sensory-Friendly Wild Lights evening in 2026.

This is designed to provide a more comfortable experience for visitors who may prefer reduced sensory stimulation.

There is also a sensory-friendly option available with the Santa's Grotto bundle.

If someone in your family has sensory requirements, check the dedicated event information when booking because availability is limited.

Is Wild Lights Good for Young Children?

Yes.

Wild Lights is designed as an all-ages family event.

There aren't horror elements or jump scares.

Instead, the emphasis is on colour, music, giant lanterns, illuminated characters and Christmas atmosphere.

Children under three are free in 2026, which is a nice change for families with toddlers.

For younger children, we'd probably choose one of the earlier evening slots so they experience everything in darkness without the night becoming too late.

Is Wild Lights Just for Families?

Definitely not.

Couples and groups of friends go too.

Once darkness falls, Dublin Zoo becomes completely different from the daytime attraction.

The lanterns, lighting and music make it surprisingly good for an autumn or Christmas date night.

Add dinner in Dublin before or afterwards and you've got a very easy winter evening out.

Can You See the Zoo Animals During Wild Lights?

Wild Lights is primarily a light festival, not a nighttime animal-viewing experience.

Many zoo animals will be in their nighttime areas or resting.

So don't visit expecting a normal Dublin Zoo day followed by lights.

If seeing the animals is important, visit Dublin Zoo during normal daytime opening hours instead, then treat Wild Lights as a separate evening experience.

How Long Does Wild Lights Take?

We'd allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours for the experience.

You can obviously walk through faster, but that rather defeats the point.

There are plenty of photo stops, large displays and areas where younger children will want to hang around.

If you're travelling with children, factor in time for toilets, food and the inevitable discussion about whether you really need another glowing souvenir.

What Should You Wear?

This is an outdoor event in Dublin during November, December and January.

Dress accordingly:

  • Waterproof coat
  • Warm layers
  • Hat and gloves
  • Comfortable waterproof footwear
  • Umbrella if rain is forecast

Irish winter weather doesn't care that you booked the tickets six weeks ago.

What Happens if it Rains?

Wild Lights is an outdoor experience, so some rain is always possible.

Generally, you should prepare to attend unless Dublin Zoo announces otherwise.

The displays can actually look brilliant on wet evenings because all the lights reflect off the ground.

Check Dublin Zoo's latest updates before leaving home if the weather is particularly poor.

Getting to Wild Lights

Wild Lights takes place at Dublin Zoo, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8.

The zoo is located inside Phoenix Park, a short distance from Dublin city centre.

By car: Parking around Dublin Zoo and Phoenix Park can become busy during major events. Allow extra time, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings in December.

By public transport: Dublin Bus services operate close to Phoenix Park, while Luas and rail options can get you within walking distance depending on your route. If you're staying in central Dublin, public transport can be easier than worrying about parking.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

For families with younger children, we'd choose November or early December and book one of the earlier evening slots.

You'll avoid some of the biggest pre-Christmas crowds while still getting the full festive atmosphere.

For couples, later slots can feel a little more relaxed.

Friday and Saturday nights close to Christmas will naturally be among the busiest.

Is Wild Lights Worth the Money?

For a family, Wild Lights isn't a cheap evening.

Two adults and two children aged three or over currently comes to €97 before food, transport or extras.

But it is also one of Ireland's largest dedicated light experiences.

You're getting a large-scale trail with nine themed zones, huge handcrafted lanterns and an experience lasting around a couple of hours.

The current early-bird offer makes the value considerably stronger because eligible bookings also receive a separate daytime Dublin Zoo family visit.

If you were already planning to visit the zoo, that's a pretty useful bonus.

What Else Can You Do Nearby?

If you're making a full day of it, there is plenty nearby.

You could combine Wild Lights with Phoenix Park, Dublin city centre, the Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol, Smithfield or Christmas markets and lights around Dublin.

For families, one option would be a daytime Christmas activity in the city followed by Wild Lights once darkness falls.

Final Thoughts

Wild Lights has become one of those Dublin events that signals Christmas is properly on the way.

And Passport to Wonder looks like one of the most colourful themes yet.

Rather than focusing on one particular period or story, the 2026 trail takes visitors around the world through nine completely different zones.

You'll go from glowing Japanese cherry blossoms and neon Seoul to Diwali, Brazilian Carnival, Irish folklore and Christmas – all in one evening.

Running from 12 November 2026 until 5 January 2027, there's plenty of time to fit it into a winter trip to Dublin.

But if you're hoping for a Friday or Saturday night close to Christmas, we'd book sooner rather than later.

Wrap up warm, charge the phone for the inevitable 150 photographs and prepare for one of Dublin's brightest nights of the year.
