Ballymastocker Beach Donegal: Swimming, Parking & Guide
Ballymastocker Beach
One of Ireland's most spectacular golden strands, overlooking Lough Swilly from the Fanad Peninsula.
About
Ballymastocker Beach lies on the eastern side of the Fanad Peninsula in north County Donegal, overlooking Lough Swilly towards the Inishowen Peninsula. Also known as Portsalon Beach or Ballymastocker Strand, the beach stretches for approximately 1.5km of broad golden sand and gently slopes towards the water. It was once voted the second most beautiful beach in the world by readers of The Observer — and once you stop at the Knockalla viewpoint above the bay on a clear day, the claim doesn't seem particularly ridiculous.
The Knockalla Coast Road climbs above Ballymastocker and gives you the classic elevated view seen in so many Donegal photographs. The entire bay sweeps beneath you towards Portsalon, with Lough Swilly stretching towards the Inishowen Peninsula. Go Visit Donegal specifically recommends the Knockalla coast drive viewpoint for the best views over the beach. Don't drive directly to the sand without stopping here first — the viewpoint is one of the finest roadside views in Donegal.
Ballymastocker is a recognised bathing beach and an identified bathing water for the 2026 season, meaning water quality is monitored by the local authority during summer. Lifeguards are deployed from 1 June to 15 September, with typical hours of 12pm–6:30pm. One important 2026 update: Ballymastocker does not currently hold a Blue Flag for the 2026 bathing season. Donegal County Council is supporting an application for the beach to regain Blue Flag status for 2027. Older guides calling it a current Blue Flag beach are out of date, but it remains a beautiful and well-managed strand.
Accessibility at Ballymastocker is particularly good. Donegal County Council lists Portsalon among 14 wheelchair-accessible beaches in County Donegal, and a beach wheelchair is available all year with advance booking recommended. Admission and parking are both free. The beach is long enough that even on good summer days, visitors spread out comfortably along the strand.
Ballymastocker sits naturally within a wider Fanad Peninsula day. From the beach, continue north to Fanad Head Lighthouse — one of the iconic stops on the Wild Atlantic Way, guiding vessels around this coastline since the early 19th century. The Mulroy Drive, a scenic 35km route linking Fanad, Ballymastocker Bay and the Rosguill Peninsula, contains 10 designated viewing points around Mulroy Bay. South of the beach, the attractive village of Rathmullan on the shore of Lough Swilly makes an excellent base for exploring the peninsula.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (June–August) is best if swimming is your priority — lifeguards operate from 1 June to 15 September. September often offers a lovely compromise between reasonable weather and fewer visitors. Spring is excellent for quieter walks and road trips. Winter brings a wild, empty atmosphere, though there is no seasonal lifeguard cover. For photography, late afternoon when light falls across the bay can be spectacular.
Getting There
Ballymastocker Beach is beside Portsalon in north County Donegal, on the Fanad Peninsula. The beach lies along the road between Rathmullan and Fanad Head. From Letterkenny, allow approximately 45–50 minutes. From Derry/Londonderry, allow around an hour. The approach via the Knockalla Coast Road from the south gives you the famous elevated viewpoint before you reach the beach — this is the recommended approach. Free parking is available at the beach.
Insider Tips
Approach via the Knockalla Coast Road from the south. The elevated viewpoint above Ballymastocker Bay is one of the best parts of the visit — don't miss it by driving directly to the beach car park.
If swimming is your priority, aim for the lifeguarded period between 1 June and 15 September, and always follow the flags on the beach. Check Beaches.ie for current water quality before entering.
A beach wheelchair is available at Portsalon all year with advance booking recommended — contact Donegal County Council before travelling rather than assuming availability on arrival.
Don't treat Ballymastocker as an isolated stop. Continue north to Fanad Head Lighthouse and consider the full Mulroy Drive loop — the Fanad Peninsula rewards slow driving and the scenery keeps improving.
Note for 2026: Ballymastocker does not currently hold Blue Flag status. Older travel guides may still list it as Blue Flag — that reflects its previous status. It remains an identified bathing water with seasonal lifeguards.
