Lough Key Forest Park — Travel Through Ireland
Lough Key Forest Park
Forest, lake, islands, and adventure in the heart of Ireland.
About
Lough Key Forest Park sits on the shores of Lough Key near Boyle in County Roscommon, and it's one of those places that consistently surprises visitors who weren't expecting much. The park covers around 350 acres of mixed woodland — oak, beech, ash, and conifer — surrounding a beautiful lake scattered with 33 islands, several of which have their own ruins, legends, and stories.
The centrepiece of the lake is Castle Island, where the ruins of a 19th-century castle sit dramatically on a small wooded island just offshore. The castle was built by the King family, who owned the Rockingham estate that once occupied this land. The estate house itself was destroyed by fire in 1957, but the walled garden, ice house, tunnel system, and various estate buildings survive and can be explored within the park. The underground tunnel system — built to allow servants to move around the estate without being seen — is one of the more unusual features and can be accessed on guided tours.
For families, Lough Key is exceptional. The Boda Borg adventure experience offers a series of physical and mental challenge rooms. The adventure playground is one of the best in Ireland — a large, well-designed space with equipment for all ages. The Zipit Forest Adventure offers zip lines and aerial trails through the treetops. And the Lough Key Experience treetop walk gives elevated views across the lake and forest canopy that are genuinely spectacular.
The walking trails through the forest are well-marked and range from short, easy loops to longer routes around the lakeshore. The park is particularly beautiful in autumn when the mixed woodland turns gold and copper, and the lake reflections are at their most dramatic. Boat trips on Lough Key operate during the summer season and give a completely different perspective on the islands and the surrounding landscape.
Best Time to Visit
Lough Key Forest Park is open year-round, though some attractions (boat trips, Zipit, Boda Borg) operate seasonally — check ahead if these are a priority. The park is at its most beautiful in autumn when the mixed woodland turns gold and copper, and in late spring when the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers. Summer is the busiest period, especially for families. The forest walks are enjoyable in any season and the park never feels as crowded as Ireland's more famous attractions.

Insider Tips
Allow at least half a day — there's far more here than most visitors expect. Between the forest walks, the treetop experience, the underground tunnels, the adventure playground, and a boat trip, you could easily fill a full day.
Book the Zipit Forest Adventure and Boda Borg in advance during summer — they fill up quickly on busy days, especially during school holidays and weekends in July and August.
The forest walks are free once you've paid the car park fee, and they're genuinely beautiful — don't skip them in favour of only the paid attractions. The lakeshore trail in particular is one of the loveliest walks in Connacht.
Combine with a visit to Boyle town, which has the impressive ruins of Boyle Abbey — a 12th-century Cistercian monastery that is one of the best-preserved medieval abbeys in Ireland and is free to enter on Wednesdays under the OPW scheme.
If you're exploring County Roscommon, Roscommon Castle is around 30 minutes south and makes a great companion stop — free entry, impressive Norman ruins, and easy to combine with a drive through the Roscommon countryside.
For a pub lunch or a pint after your visit, Anderson's Thatch Pub near Knockcroghery is one of the most characterful traditional pubs in Roscommon — a genuine thatched pub with great food and a warm welcome.
Carrick-on-Shannon is the nearest town to Lough Key and well worth a stop — VDA on Bridge Street is one of the finest specialty coffee shops in the northwest, with excellent food and a beautifully designed space.
