Fowley's Falls — Travel Through Ireland
Fowley's Falls
Leitrim's most spectacular waterfall, hidden in ancient woodland.
About
Fowley's Falls sits in a wooded gorge on the Owennayle River near Manorhamilton in County Leitrim, and it's one of those places that feels genuinely undiscovered. While the Cliffs of Moher and Glendalough draw enormous crowds, Fowley's Falls rewards those willing to venture into Ireland's quieter northwest with a waterfall that is, in many ways, more beautiful than anything on the tourist trail.
The walk to the falls is short — around 20 to 30 minutes from the car park — and passes through ancient oak woodland draped in moss and fern. The path follows the river upstream, with the sound of rushing water growing louder as you approach. When the falls finally come into view, the effect is dramatic: a 15-metre curtain of white water dropping into a deep, dark pool surrounded by sheer rock walls and overhanging trees.
Leitrim is one of Ireland's least visited counties, which is precisely what makes it special. The landscape around Manorhamilton is a mix of drumlin hills, river valleys, and ancient woodland — a quieter, greener version of Ireland that most visitors never see. Fowley's Falls is the centrepiece of this landscape, and the walk there is as rewarding as the destination itself.
The falls are at their most impressive after heavy rain, when the Owennayle River runs high and the cascade becomes a thundering torrent. In drier summer months the flow is gentler but the woodland setting is arguably more beautiful, with dappled light filtering through the oak canopy and wildflowers lining the path. Either way, it's worth the journey.
Best Time to Visit
Fowley's Falls can be visited year-round, but autumn and winter bring the most dramatic water flow after Atlantic rain. The woodland is at its most beautiful in late spring and early summer when the canopy is fresh green and wildflowers are in bloom. Autumn turns the oak woodland gold and copper. Avoid visiting immediately after very heavy rainfall if the path is likely to be flooded — the river can rise quickly.
Getting There
Fowley's Falls is located near Manorhamilton in County Leitrim. From Manorhamilton town, follow signs for Fowley's Falls — the car park is a short drive from the town centre. Manorhamilton is about 20 minutes from Sligo town via the N16. The walk from the car park to the falls takes around 20–30 minutes each way on a well-marked path through woodland. Wear walking boots as the path can be muddy.
Insider Tips
Wear waterproof boots — the path follows the river and can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain. The rocks near the base of the falls are also wet and mossy.
Visit after a period of rain for the most dramatic water flow. The falls are beautiful in all conditions but genuinely spectacular when the river is running high after Atlantic weather.
Combine the walk with a stop in Manorhamilton town, which has a good café scene and the ruins of a 17th-century castle. The town is a useful base for exploring this part of Leitrim and the surrounding Dartry Mountains.
Bring a camera with a wide-angle lens if you have one — the gorge is narrow and the falls are tall, so a wider field of view helps capture the full scene. A tripod is useful for long-exposure shots of the water.
If you're in the area, Glencar Waterfall in County Sligo is around 30 minutes away and makes an excellent companion visit — two of the northwest's finest waterfalls in a single day.
