About

The Oarsman sits right in the centre of Carrick-on-Shannon, only a short walk from the River Shannon and marina. That central location makes it easy to combine with a walk along the boardwalk, a visit to the Dock Arts Centre, or simply an afternoon exploring the town before settling in for dinner. If you're staying centrally, you can walk — which is exactly how an evening at The Oarsman is best approached.

The MICHELIN Guide currently lists The Oarsman for traditional cuisine and places it in the €€ price category. The guide highlights its use of local produce, fish dishes and homemade bread. Discover Ireland describes it as a multi-award-winning bar and restaurant built around local artisan ingredients, craft drinks and carefully prepared food. Good Food Ireland has approved The Oarsman since 2022, also emphasising its focus on Irish producers and ingredient-led cooking.

The menu changes with availability and season — which is a good sign. Expect dishes built around Irish ingredients, seafood, quality meat, seasonal vegetables and homemade breads. Seafood is particularly worth watching for: MICHELIN specifically highlights the fish dishes, while Discover Ireland includes The Oarsman among its recommended seafood restaurants in Ireland. Being in Carrick-on-Shannon doesn't mean the menu is limited to freshwater fish — ingredients are sourced from around Ireland.

The building has two personalities. Downstairs is a traditional gastropub: dark timber, old memorabilia, fishing equipment, wine, craft beer and spirits. MICHELIN notes that The Oarsman even has a lager brewed specifically for the pub. Upstairs, Georgina Campbell's guide describes an attractive semi-open first-floor restaurant overlooking the bar below — more restaurant-style dining, but without the atmosphere becoming overly formal. It works particularly well for anyone wanting very good food in a relaxed setting.

Current opening hours: Tuesday and Wednesday dinner only (5pm–8:45pm); Thursday to Saturday lunch (12:30pm–3pm) and dinner (5pm–8:45pm); Monday and Sunday normally closed except Bank Holiday Sundays. Booking is strongly recommended for Friday evenings, Saturday lunch and Saturday evening, and during busy summer periods. For enquiries within 24 hours, phone directly on 071 962 1733. An enquiry isn't confirmed until The Oarsman has responded — worth remembering before you travel.
