Galway Christmas Market 2026: Dates & Visitor Guide

Few Irish cities suit Christmas quite like Galway.

Once the lights go on around Eyre Square, wooden chalets appear and the Big Wheel starts turning above the city centre, Galway takes on a completely different atmosphere.

The Galway Christmas Market is expected to return to Eyre Square for Christmas 2026, bringing festive food, gifts, rides, Santa visits and entertainment right into the heart of the city.

Galway Tourism currently lists the market as expected to run from around 7 November until 31 December 2026, although the final official 2026 opening dates are still to be confirmed.

So if you're considering a Christmas break in Galway this year, here's what to expect.

When is Galway Christmas Market 2026?

The Galway Christmas Market is expected to take place throughout November and December 2026 in Eyre Square.

At the time of writing, the expected dates are:

7 November – 31 December 2026

However, the final dates have not yet been officially confirmed, so we'd recommend checking again before making a journey specifically for the market.

Expected opening hours are:

Monday–Wednesday: 12pm–8pm

Thursday–Saturday: 10am–10pm

Sunday: 10am–8pm

The bar area traditionally remains open slightly later on some evenings.

Where is the Galway Christmas Market?

You really can't miss it.

The main Christmas Market takes over Eyre Square, right in the centre of Galway City.

That location is one of the things that makes Galway's market so convenient.

Galway's train and bus stations are nearby, while Shop Street, the Latin Quarter and most of the city-centre pubs and restaurants are only a few minutes' walk away.

That means you can easily combine the market with a full day or weekend exploring Galway.

Is Galway Christmas Market Free?

Yes.

Entry to the Galway Christmas Market itself is free.

You can wander around the stalls, enjoy the lights and soak up the atmosphere without purchasing an admission ticket.

You'll obviously pay separately for food and drink, gifts, Big Wheel rides, the carousel, Santa visits and other attractions — but that makes it a particularly good option for families who want a festive day out without immediately paying a large entrance fee.

The illuminated Big Wheel and festive market stalls at Galway Christmas Market 2026

Ride the Big Wheel

The huge illuminated Big Wheel has become one of the most recognisable sights of Christmas in Galway.

Standing around 32 metres high, it rises above Eyre Square and provides fantastic views over the market and surrounding city centre.

I'd particularly recommend riding it after dark.

Looking down over the Christmas lights and the streets of Galway from above is a completely different experience from walking through the market itself.

Take the Kids on the Carousel

Younger children can also enjoy the traditional Christmas carousel.

Along with the market stalls and Big Wheel, it gives Eyre Square that classic European Christmas market feel.

There is usually a separate charge for rides.

Visit Santa's Cabin

Families can also visit Santa's Cabin at the Galway Christmas Market.

For 2026, Santa's Cabin is expected to operate on weekends during the main festive period.

Expected opening hours are:

Friday: 4pm–8pm

Saturday: 11am–8pm

Sunday: 11am–7.30pm

Tickets are expected to include a visit with Santa and an age-appropriate present. The cabin is located in Eyre Square between the Browne Doorway and the main Christmas tree. Certain off-peak appointments may also be available for visitors with additional sensory needs.

Booking ahead is a good idea, especially for December weekends.

Eat Your Way Around the Market

Let's face it: half the fun of a Christmas market is eating things you probably wouldn't normally order on a Tuesday afternoon.

Galway's market traditionally features a mixture of Irish and continental food — expect festive favourites such as bratwurst, crepes, churros, burgers, sweet treats, hot chocolate, mulled drinks and baked goods.

And because you're right in Galway city centre, you can also easily wander into the Latin Quarter if you want a proper sit-down meal.

Enjoy the German Bier Keller

The German-style Bier Keller has become another familiar feature of Galway Christmas Market.

It's particularly popular with adults visiting in the evening and usually serves a mix of festive drinks and German-inspired food.

Galway can already be pretty lively on a December weekend. Add a Christmas market into the mix and the atmosphere around Eyre Square and the Latin Quarter becomes even better.

Look for Handmade Christmas Gifts

Not everything at the market is about food.

The wooden chalets also offer plenty of opportunities for Christmas shopping — you'll usually find traders selling jewellery, crafts, clothing, Christmas decorations, handmade gifts, artwork, toys and food gifts.

If you're trying to avoid buying the same presents available in every shopping centre, it's worth taking some time to browse.

Don't Forget St Nicholas' Christmas Market

There's actually more than one Christmas market experience in Galway.

The traditional St Nicholas' Market beside St Nicholas' Collegiate Church also expands for Christmas. Its dedicated Christmas trading period generally runs during the second half of December, with extra festive trading in the run-up to Christmas Eve.

This one feels quite different from Eyre Square — it's smaller, more local and particularly good for artisan food, handmade products and independent traders.

I'd visit both if you're in Galway during December.

Look Out for Galway Westend Christmas Market

Galway's Westend is also expected to host its own Christmas Market again during November and December 2026.

The market at Silke's Cash & Carry on William Street West is expected to feature artisan stalls, with local makers selling gifts, jewellery, candles, prints, knitwear, festive food and crafts. The Westend market has also featured family activities, live music and workshops.

If you enjoy smaller independent markets, this could be a nice contrast to the much bigger Eyre Square event.

Best Time to Visit Galway Christmas Market

Personally, I'd aim for a weekday in late November or early December if you can.

You'll still get the lights and atmosphere without quite the same crowds you can encounter on December weekends.

If you're travelling with children, late afternoon works particularly well — you can arrive while it's still bright, explore the stalls and then watch the market transform as darkness falls.

For adults visiting for the atmosphere, Friday or Saturday evening will naturally be livelier.

Is Galway Christmas Market Good for Kids?

Definitely.

There's a nice mixture of things that work for younger visitors: Santa's Cabin, the Big Wheel, the carousel, Christmas lights, food stalls and festive entertainment. And because entry to the market itself is free, you can choose exactly how much or how little you want to spend once you arrive.

For younger children, I'd probably visit earlier in the day before the market gets busier.

What Else Can You Do in Galway at Christmas?

Don't make the mistake of visiting Eyre Square and then immediately heading home.

One of the biggest advantages of the Galway Christmas Market is the city surrounding it.

Take a walk down Shop Street and through the Latin Quarter, which looks particularly atmospheric under the Christmas lights. Then continue towards Quay Street, Spanish Arch, Galway City Museum, the Claddagh, Galway Cathedral and Galway's Westend.

If the weather behaves, you could also walk out towards Salthill Promenade — it takes roughly half an hour from the city centre and gives you a completely different side of Galway. On a crisp winter day, the views across Galway Bay can be beautiful. Just wrap up properly. That Atlantic wind doesn't care how festive you're feeling.

Getting to Galway Christmas Market

Galway is particularly easy to visit without driving.

Direct trains operate between Dublin Heuston and Galway Ceannt Station — Ceannt Station is right beside Eyre Square, so you can step off the train and be at the Christmas Market within minutes. Several bus and coach operators also provide services into Galway from Dublin and other parts of Ireland, with the main city bus station extremely close to Eyre Square.

If you're driving, city-centre parking can become very busy during December. There are several car parks within walking distance of Eyre Square, but if you're staying overnight, I'd strongly consider leaving the car at your accommodation.

Is Galway Christmas Market Worth Visiting?

We'd say yes.

The setting makes a huge difference. Rather than being tucked away in a separate event space, Galway Christmas Market sits right in the middle of one of Ireland's most enjoyable cities.

You can browse the market, have lunch in the Latin Quarter, visit Santa, ride the Big Wheel, do some Christmas shopping and finish the evening in one of Galway's pubs without ever needing to get back into the car.

And because entry itself is free, it's easy to incorporate into a wider Galway city break.
