About

Unlike a castle or abbey, Rathcroghan is not one single monument. It is an enormous archaeological landscape containing around 240 identified ancient sites, including burial mounds, ringforts, standing stones, ceremonial earthworks and prehistoric monuments. Described by Rathcroghan Visitor Centre as the oldest and largest unexcavated royal site in Europe, this is a place where the story unlocks the landscape.

Inside Rathcroghan

Best Time to Visit

Autumn is the most atmospheric time to visit, especially around Halloween when the Samhain connection feels most vivid. Summer offers the best range of tour times (11:30am and 2pm weekday tours). Spring is excellent for the archaeological landscape with manageable visitor numbers. The centre is open year-round Monday–Saturday, so winter visits are possible — just expect mud, cold and shorter daylight.

Getting There

Rathcroghan Visitor Centre is in Tulsk, County Roscommon, on the N5 between Roscommon town and Strokestown. Eircode: F45 HH51. Off-street car parking and coach parking are available at the visitor centre. The main archaeological landscape lies a short distance west of Tulsk along the N5.
