About

Kin Khao is tucked down Abbey Lane on the historic west side of Athlone, only a short walk from Athlone Castle and the River Shannon. The building is hard to miss — bright yellow with red window frames, with the restaurant upstairs in a colourful, intimate dining room decorated with Thai artwork and tapestries. It feels completely different from the traditional pubs surrounding it, which is rather the point.

The restaurant was opened in 2003 by Adam Lyons and his Thai wife Janya. Janya's family food traditions are central to the kitchen — recipes and techniques passed through generations, prepared by an all-Thai kitchen team. The food philosophy is straightforward: Thai food cooked in a genuinely Thai style, using Irish meat and locally sourced fish and vegetables, without MSG, artificial additives or preservatives. Everything is cooked to order rather than pre-prepared in bulk.

The menu has a particularly strong Isaan influence — the north-eastern region of Thailand bordering Laos, known for spicy, sour, salty, herb-forward dishes. Alongside familiar options like Pad Thai, green curry and Tom Yum, you'll find dishes like Larb (minced meat with lime, chilli, herbs and toasted rice powder), Thai salads including beef salad, minced chicken larb and green papaya salad, and Yum Khao Tord — a crispy curried-rice salad with herbs, ginger and peanuts. If your experience of Thai food is mostly mild green curry, Kin Khao gives you considerably more to explore.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. The restaurant publishes dedicated vegan information alongside its wider menu. Note that food is prepared in a kitchen handling common allergens including peanuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy and wheat — if you have a serious allergy, contact the restaurant directly before visiting. Current opening hours: Monday to Thursday 5pm–9pm; Friday and Saturday 4pm–10pm; Sunday 4pm–9pm. Booking is strongly recommended for Friday and Saturday evenings and bank holiday weekends.
